Best Airline Loyalty Programs

Airline loyalty programs are no longer just an option for fat-cat corporate travelers. Today it seems every airline has a rewards program for standard vacation takers. If you haven’t heard of loyalty programs or frequent flyer miles before, you may be asking yourself how you get frequent flyer miles? Frequent flyer miles work just like a shop loyalty card. You know the ones: buy nine coffees and get the tenth free.

So how do you become a member of an airline program and start earning? It’s so easy. You choose your airline or alliance and sign up to their airline rewards card program on their website or over the phone. Then you’re ready to start booking your travel. Once you’re signed up, earn points in the following ways:

  • In the air – by purchasing one-way or round-trip flights and presenting your frequent flyer card at check-in or entering your membership number online when you check-in.
  • On the ground – by using partnered services such as hotel stays, car rentals, or insurance.
  • Credit cards – by applying for a credit card with a bonus of airline miles on sign up and general spending.
  • Airline shopping sites – by shopping online at partnered shopping websites. For example, with United, you can earn two miles for every dollar spent at Macy’s.

By traveling a certain number of miles or spending a certain amount of money, your loyalty card will track these trips, and you start to earn points. You should consider whether you want to be loyal to a particular brand.

On the other hand, you may only be able to afford flexibility in how you earn airline rewards and where you spend them. Which loyalty program you’re signed up to depends on the types of rewards and the number of accumulated “miles” you need to redeem.

Why are frequent flyer programs still relevant?

Air travel is still popular, and with cheaper flights and holiday destinations becoming more widely available, flying has never been more affordable. Not only are frequent flyer programs perfect for your holidays with the increase in global businesses, but it’s also critical that corporations stay connected with colleagues.

If you regularly travel for business, signing up for a loyalty program will save you money in the long run. It will also give you a comfortable experience during your trip if you choose to use airport or flight upgrades.

Is there a frequent flyer program for all airlines?

Not all airlines offer frequent flyer programs, but there are air alliance schemes that work for several airlines simultaneously. The most common alliances are:

  • SkyTeam
  • Star Alliance
  • OneWorld

These links will take you to their respective websites to give you more information about the airlines that partner with them and their airline rewards programs on offer. Pro Tip: By picking a loyalty program from an airline in each alliance, you set yourself up to earn points no matter which alliance you choose.

How to Find the Best Airline Loyalty Programs

Like supermarket choices, there are a plethora of options for travel loyalty programs, and depending on how and why you travel, it could make the difference in the rewards you receive when signing up. Here’s a quick rundown on what to keep in mind when you’re considering a travel loyalty program, depending on your reasons for traveling.

Business Travelers

  • Look for loyalty programs that cater to business professionals
  • Check the terms and conditions for the expiry date for points
  • Find a loyalty program that uses airlines that fly from your nearest airport
  • If you’re a global traveler, use a loyalty program that uses several different airlines

Families / Group Travelers

  • Sign up to an airline alliance, so you don’t have to fly with the same airline
  • Check if you can pool points
  • Check the age limit on points accumulation if you have children

Less Frequent Flyers

  • Sign up for a program that has the longest expiry on accumulated points
  • Work out in advance where you might travel in the future to pick the most relevant loyalty program
  • Consider a credit card choice or a membership that offers perks through “amount spent” rather than “miles traveled”

Common Questions Asked: Choosing the Best Airline Loyalty Programs

We’ve provided you with a lot of information here; it can be information overload! To help you out, we’ve summarized ways to make it easier when choosing a frequent flyer program:

1. Does this airline fly out of your home airport?

The golden rule of flying. Do the eligible airlines fly from my local airport? Don’t fall into the trap of signing up a loyalty program that you can’t use. Check your often used airport and the airlines that fly from there to make sure you will be earning the most points.

2. Which frequent flyer perks are you interested in?

Different airlines and alliances offer various perks. These can range from discounted flights, pre-flight upgrades, flight upgrades, and even experience days when you reach your destination. If you feel you want to save money in a particular area, check if the loyalty program offers rewards for this and choose that option.

4. Does the airline belong to an alliance?

Airlines that offer a loyalty program and belong to an airline alliance will have more ways for you to earn points. One trick is to sign up to an airline that is among each of the top three alliances. Keep track of which loyalty program works with which partner or airline and earn points continuously. Signing up for an airline loyalty program is free, so what’s stopping you?

5. Will my points expire?

For airlines to make frequent flyer programs profitable, they often throw a clause into the terms and conditions. The clause may state that your earned points will expire after a certain length of time. If you know you aren’t much of a regular traveler, sign up for a membership program with a “non-expiry” perk or one with the longest time between uses.

Warning: read the fine print. Sometimes airlines claim their points do not expire. However, they end up changing them into legacy points which cannot be used for a standard “active” point purchase.

6. Can I transfer points between family members?

Let’s face it; people rarely travel alone if they’re taking a vacation. If you have a large family, you can earn points quicker and climb up that elite status level by pooling points. Airlines sometimes let children have their own membership but may have an age limit. Qantas doesn’t, so it’s worth looking into these if you have little nippers.

7. Business vs. standard?

Some airlines offer different membership rewards for corporate travelers. Make sure you aren’t missing out on more points or relevant perks by choosing the right option for you. If you’re a corporate traveler but still take regular leisure vacations, there’s no harm in signing up for both membership options.

8. Do you have one airline you love, or are you open to using different carriers?

We have talked a lot in this article about alliance groups. If you’re a creature of habit and only fly with one particular airline, there isn’t much point in signing up to a loyalty program with other airline options. This can reduce your chance of earning points. Log in to your favorite airline’s website to see if they offer a stand-alone membership program.

Summing It All Up

What are airline loyalty programs?

Individual airlines set up airline loyalty programs in the hope that they will gain repeat business. By doing so, members of the program can save money or receive other “perks.” The perks may include upgrades to airport lounge access, better seats, or the occasional free flight when they book and travel with said airline often.

How do airline loyalty programs work?

To start collecting loyalty points, it’s straightforward. All you need to do is register for the loyalty program online or over the phone (depending which operator you’re using). Then keep using this airline when you travel by air. Each airline has different terms and conditions to gain and redeem points. It’s always best to check with the operator before signing up to make sure it is the right choice for you.

Can I only redeem points for flights?

These days, a lot of airlines offer other bonuses for their members. Gone are the days when you had to use your air miles within a year on another flight to a destination you might not want to go. Use your air miles for added extras at the airport like free checked bags, early boarding, hotel upgrades, and car rentals, to name a few. If you’re after a specific perk, do some research into airline loyalty programs before signing up to your favorite rewards card.
